Facebook is one of
the Social Networking Sites that popular in Malaysia. After 12th
General Election, political allies in Malaysia realize the important of new
media in lure supporters. The features of traditional media which only certain
people can publish their writing and the information exposed is preferred to
government encourages public to use new media in gaining information. This
study attempts to discuss on the influence of Facebook on the nature of
political participation. This study focuses on the undergraduates’ student at
UiTM Shah Alam. This research adapted theoretical framework proposed by Shah et
al which consists of four variables (Independent Variable: Online information
searching, Dependent Variable: Political Participation, Mediator: Interactive
Civic Messaging and Interpersonal Political Discussion).Researcher carry out
quantitative analysis where a questionnaire was distributed to the respondents.
A standard SPSS statistical are used to measure the quantitative portion.
Finding found that respondents like articles in Facebook to gain political
knowledge. There is a low offline
political discussion where it sourced from Facebook, usage of Facebook
encourage students political communication and finally research found that
Facebook usage influence the nature of political participation among students.
As a conclusion, Facebook usage influence the nature of political participation
among students.
