JUVENILE PERCEPTIONS ON JOB OPPORTUNITY, EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS AND PERSONALITY IN ENHANCING THE EFECTIVENESS OF JUVENILE’S VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME.


It is well known that, employment is an important need to the most individuals. It provides income, social connection and feeling of societal connection and self-worth. For ex-offenders, employment has a positive effect on desistance from further crime and their reintegration to the society. Rapid changes in the industrial sectors such as in the field of technology, manufacturing, marketing and information technology have contributed towards a competitive borderless world. Consequently, the industrial sector will require dynamic and versatile workers to face up to the challenges of workplace today. Workers not only require having technical skills but also need to have soft skills to complement the current industrial needs. For juveniles, vocational and skills training is one of the platform that provide them the skills needed by the industry which enable them to compete for the job market. The purpose of this study is to explore the juvenile perceptions towards vocational and skills program carried out with juvenile categories. There are there focuses of the juvenile’s perceptions that are interest of this study which is job opportunity, employability skills and personality development. 70 respondents were chosen as the respondents from Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg Besi, Cheras and Sg Lereh, Melaka. The data collected was through the set of questionnaire and these were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The findings from this research show that, the main reason that encouraging juveniles to participate in the vocational and skills training program is because of the future employment opportunities. The interactions with the juveniles and teacher provide a conducive environment that boost their self-confidence and self-esteem and helps them better prepare for the life outside the institution. However, the level of employability skills acquired by the juveniles through vocational and skills training program is at the low level. Measure has to be taken to instill the employability skills through vocational and skills training program so that their skills can be increase at the higher level and will benefit them in the labor force market at the future.
