THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND THE AWARENESS OF ABSENTEEISM: A STUDY AMONG EMPLOYEES AT ROYAL MALAYSIAN CUSTOM DEPARTMENT, PUTRAJAYA


This study is review on examining and learning on the relationship of employee engagement with the awareness of absenteeism in the public sector. The case study of this paper were done in the Royal Malaysian Custom Department in Putrajaya. The disciplinary problem among the civil servant have tarnished the image of the public sector who supposedly they serve the public. The problem of this issue have been question by the public and people are losing trust towards the government. One of the issues that’s specifically discuss in this study is absenteeism where it could affects the cost of the organization. It was found out that the public service department who have employed about 1.6 million of civil servant where 60% of them were perform below standard. Lacking in the motivation has led to the problem of absenteeism. For this study the method that is being used were done through the quantitative approach. The survey was given to 310 respondent which are the employees of the Royal Malaysian Custom Department Putrajaya. Few analyses have been done in order to meet research objective and hypotheses such multiple regression and PROCESS. From the study it was found out that in the organization the employees are highly aware of the absenteeism problem that currently happen in the public sector where mean (M)=4.10 with standard deviation, SD=0.61 . All the three variable is analyse through multiple regression whereas the results shows that leadership is significant (Beta value=.352, p=.000), while training & career development and teamwork have no significant value (Beta value=.147, p=0.58) and (Beta value=.008, p=.923). Thus, it indicates that leadership is the most influential driver of employee engagement with the awareness of absenteeism. However, gender as moderator variable has no effect on the relationship between independent and dependent variables as all the P-value after R2 change is p>0.05. In conclusion, since leadership do influence the awareness of absenteeism in RMCD, few action need to be taken by the organization by relating the element of leadership in engage employees to reduce the absenteeism in public sector.
