IRREGULAR MIGRANTS: A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF MALAYSIA


This study examines and analyses threat posed by irregular migrants to Malaysia’s national security. For the purpose of this study is to examine closely and thoroughly the threat posed by the irregular migrants. The study of security in the global context is a sub-discipline of the wider subject in International Relations. The current influx of the irregular migrants has created insecurity to Malaysia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The presence also has implicated to social disharmony in illegal activities. The threat of irregular migrant to territorial sovereignty and national security is crucial to be studied due to the security concerns to the people who live in Malaysia. This study aims to examine and analyses threat posed by irregular migrants to Malaysia’s national security, identify challenges in controlling irregular migrants in Malaysia and analyze the perspectives of Malaysia regarding the impact of irregular migrants on social - economy and political spectrum in Malaysia. The sample of this study are representatives of each organization such as Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), Immigration Department, and Malaysia Community Care Foundations (MCCF) who are experts on the irregular migrants and the thread posed to the national security. This study employs qualitative research method where interviews are being used in order to investigate the key objectives. The threats by the current influx of irregular migrants gave impacts to Malaysia national security, social, and political spectrum. Thus, this study suggest that since irregular migrants does not affected the economy spectrum, the government should put more effort to combat the security threats form the social and political spectrum.
