Factors Affecting Academic Performance: A Study on The Postgraduate Students of UITM Shah Alam


Postgraduates students in Malaysia have experience an expended number in higher educational institutions. The increasing number of postgraduate’s students in Malaysia was influenced by the improvement of educational systems in all aspect of financial assist, accommodations, learning facility, and government policy. The high failure rates among students in public universities is the example of poor performance in academic and this situation commonly happens when no actions taken to improve student performance. This situation will affect many parties and mostly reputations of higher educational institution will be effected. The measurement of student’s performance in public universities is necessary despite the complexity to be analyze where it involves total amount of money were being used, students’ academic, graduations rates, and quality of research that been conducted. This studies aim to identify the factor that affecting students’ performance among the students of postgraduates in UITM Shah Alam, and the solution to improve academic performance in this university. Four variables were examined in this study which is personal issues, adult learners, university facilities, and learning assessment. The data were analyzed using correlation and multiple regression to evaluate which variables have affecting their academic performance and also to identify which variables are most affecting their performance. Based on the finding, personal issues, university facilities, adult learners, and learning assessment do have influence on student’s academic performance. The finding also reveal that personal issues are the most affecting factors towards students performance although the level of academic performance among the respondents are high. This study also use motivation factor as the moderating factor between each of variables to examine the impact of motivation towards academic performance, and the result shows that motivations have a influencial factor in their studies by showing a lower relationship (22%). The result of study also suggested that an effective strategies needed for the faculties to enhance student’s performance is through mentoring them in facing challenges in tertiary education and the students also need to balance their commitment between working and studies as this challenges are different compare to traditional students.
