FACTORS INFLUENCE YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS: CASE STUDY IN SELANGOR


In the globalization era, the youth participation in politics leads to the democratic environment in achieving mission 2020. The voice of the youth is a vital in developing the nation and to create a new perspective in politics. However, numbers of youth’s involvement in politics in Selangor are still in a critical phase due to from the survey that was conducted by Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya Malaysia in 2015, they were detected the numbers of youths that not register as a voter still high. In this scenario, the summary was being evaluated whereby from the estimation of the total number of youths in Selangor is about 15.6 million numbers from the aged 21 years old and above, the number who had registered as a voter as of May 2015 were 11,247,525 voters only. This study focuses on to identify whether the social media can influence youth participation in politics in Selangor, to identify whether the family supports can influence youth participation in politics in Selangor and to identify whether the educational background can influence youth participation in politics in Selangor. This research found that there were three main factors that influence youth participation in politics, such as social media, family supports and educational background. The participants of this study consisted of youth between 21 to 30 years old. From the results, it was shown that the social media, family supports and educational background have a strong correlation factor with the youth participation in politics in Selangor. The implications of this study are in terms of useful information related to the actions on how to encourage youth’s participation in politics. Due to this, youth specifically can contribute to produce future leaders that can lead our country to achievable visions of 2020. In conclusions, Malaysia in the ongoing process of achieving the visions of 2020, the youth of today are the main of the key drivers of a country achieving as a developing country in the stabilization of economic, social, and politics.
