The community plays an important role in mitigating the issue of child maltreatment. In examining the prevention mechanism on Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN), Malaysia ranked at the moderate level (44%) of overall readiness score based on the World Health Organization (WHO) assessment tool for child maltreatment readiness. The main aim of this study was to determine a relationship between collective efficacy and child maltreatment in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. In particular, the main study’s objectives were to determine the level of child maltreatment among Petaling Jaya community, to examine the relationship between collective efficacy and child maltreatment and to identify which one of collective efficacy elements most affects child maltreatment. The study has adopted a cross-sectional and correlational study research design. A total of 390 questionnaire surveys were distributed to Petaling Jaya community who were married with at least one child. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version of 22.0 was used for data analysis. The results of this study have found that, the level of child maltreatment among community in Petaling Jaya, Selangor were at the low level (M=2.1403, SD=0.78260). It was also found that there was a relationship (r= 0.111, p<0.05) between social cohesion and child maltreatment, whilst the informal social control did not show a relationship (r= 0.098, p>0.05) with child maltreatment. Finally, the social cohesion was the most contributing factor to child maltreatment among community in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The results of this study lead to several significant findings. Several recommendations were provided to the Government of Malaysia to initiate several community approaches in addressing the child maltreatment in Malaysia.
