THE RISING CHINA SOFT POWER IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD: AN OVERVIEW OF SRI LANKA, MYANMAR AND SENEGAL


China has focused on improving its image in the developing world by using “soft power” to exert its influence over the less develop countries. China invested billion of dollars to convince the world to accept its rise in the international system. This study focuses on the soft power tools used by China that play a significant instrument in the developing world. It also discusses the consequences of China involvement in the domestic affairs of the countries. To this end, China has employed various soft power tools including Chinese culture, language, arts, aids, trades and investment to promote its influence all over the world. This study also examines on the durability of China relationship with these developing countries. The extensive literature review on the concept of soft power tools used by China, as well as journal articles and books that also used as a supporting data. This study conclude that for China, culture is a strong weapon to show the force of a country. Exerting its soft power to the world is crucial for China to spread it sphere of influence to not only the smaller states but also to the rest of the world. However, at the same time China wants to maintain and promote its good image to the world by emphasizing more towards giving assistance to these less developed countries. Finally, the result of the study suggested that the smaller states could be easily defeated with a weak soft power and that is how China took the opportunities to strengthen more it soft power by broaden its sphere of influence.
