Balancing the demand of works and family is one of the biggest challenges for most
working people. Work-family conflict is an inter-conflict that occurs due to often-
contradictory pressure of work and family domains in certain cases. This term is used to
describe individuals who are burdened with their job responsibilities as well as other
responsibilities. In other words, this term refers to the frequent conflicts faced by an
individual who works and has the difficulty to balance their daily life between work and
family. This study was conducted to investigate a few initiatives that have been
introduced by the Malaysian government to reduce the work-family conflict among the
working people and also to provide the local insights on how this policy has been
implemented in the state of Selangor. This study covers the context of the initiatives that
have been introduced by the Malaysian government under the Family-Friendly Policy,
which are the parental leaves, childcare services and flexible work arrangements. All of
these initiatives introduced are based on the situation of work-family conflicts faced by
the workers and involved 357 workers in the state of Selangor comprising the public and
private sector. By using literature review and strata random sampling methods, Based on
the study that has been conducted, this study has found that there is a correlation between
the three independent variables of the study with the dependent variable. By using
Pearson Correlation analysis, parental leave has shown that there is a significant and
moderate relationship with the work-family conflict, (r = 0.610, p <0.05, 0.000). For the
childcare services, this study has found that there is a significant and low relationship
between this independent variable with work-family conflict, (r = 0.389, p <0.05, 0.000)
while for flexible work arrangement, there is also a significant and low positive
relationship between this independent variable with work-family conflict, (r = 0.176, p
<0.05, 0.001). The Multiple Regression analysis has shown that parental leave is the most
influential initiatives taken under Family-Friendly Policy to help in reducing work-family
conflict among working people, (B = 0.537, p = 0.000). Furthermore, the process analysis
also showed that gender has moderated the relationship between parental leave and work-
family conflict, B = -0.229, 95% CI (-0.417, -0.040), t = -2.386, p <0.05. The findings of
this study hope to assist the government and the organizations in ensuring that whatever
family policies and programs have been introduced meets the needs of the working
people in reducing the work-family conflict that often occurs among them. Several
recommendations that could potentially benefit the organization, government and the
body of knowledge, have been discussed at the end of this study.
