The prevalence of risks and impacts of climate change and global warming have forced the world
to place greater emphasis on energy saving and carbon emission. As to date, many governments
around the world including Malaysia have formulated measures to promote different kinds of
renewable energy sources in relation to their green policies. One of the most important measures
are the implementation of sustainable transportation. Presently, however, it was reported that only
20 percent of Malaysians are using public transportation to commute. This fact is an indication
that Malaysia is still far from its target to achieve 40 percent of people using public transportation
by the year 2030. In Kuala Lumpur area specifically, the residents spend more than 250 million
hours a year stuck in traffic, or around 20 days a year per person. In addition, only 17 percent
residents in Kuala Lumpur used public transport. Therefore, this study would like to examine the
mediating effects of attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control on residents’
behavioral intention towards sustainable transportation using the extended Theory of Planned
Behaviour and determine factors that influence residents’ behavioral intention. This study has been
conducted in Kuala Lumpur area. The quantitative method has been employed and a total of 450
questionnaires have been distributed to the Kuala Lumpur residents. Based on the findings, it was
found that the mediating variables which are attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral
control significantly mediates the relationship between independent variables (behavioral beliefs,
normative beliefs and control beliefs) toward residents behavioral intention. These shown that, it
essential to consider residents attitude, norms and behavioural control to understand the inclination
of using public transportation among residents and eventually realize sustainable transportation.
For future research, this study recommended that the scope to be expanded, employing a
qualitative or mixed mode research to better understand this phenomenon.
