DETERMINANTS THAT INFLUENCE WOMEN CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN SELANGOR


In Malaysia, there is still a huge gap in labour force participation rate among men and
women which are 80.4% and 55.2%. Indirectly, it has contributed towards the low
number of women participation in the top management position due to lack of career
development given to women employees. Therefore, this research investigates the factors
that influence women career development in Selangor, Malaysia. Although past
researchers have listed several factors that influence women career development, the
author has chosen three significant variables from previous researchers to be studied in
this research which are male dominated culture, opportunities for career advancement and
family commitment. The main objective of the research was to explain the most
influential factor in women career development. In this study, a set of questionnaires
were distributed to a total of 258 selected respondents in order to collect the data.
Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. From the analysis, it was found
that male dominated culture has the most influence on women career development. It can
be concluded that, the determinant that influences women career development is caused
by male dominated culture. The significant of the study is to assist the government,
organizations and women employees on what are the determinants that has affected the
career development of women and what they can do in order to cope with the issue arise.
