Most people in the workplace agree that workplace politics is a reality of organizational life. Politicking is one of the options for those who wish to influence decisions and it is common to find organizational members or unit engaging in influence tactics (e.g.; ingratiation, impression management, coalition formation, information control) to protect or further their own interest, especially if their workplace characterized by uncertainty, limited resources and lack of trust. Although organizational politics can work either for or against an organization, it is often considered dysfunctional because it has the potential to disrupt organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Hence, this study was conducted to examine the effects of gender and service group on of influence tactics by administrative staff in UiTM Alor Gajah, Melaka. This study focused on dministrative staff in UiTM Alor Gajah, Melaka, represented by 101 respondents from various organizational levels. The main objectives of this study were to identify the most frequently use influence tactics among administrative staff based on their perception and responses. The research objective were to identify the reasons employees use influence tactics at the workplace, to determine the influence of gender and service groups towards influence tactics as the workplace, to identify the positive or negative aspects that administrative staff like or dislike about organizational politics and the reasons employees use influence tactics at the workplace. The statistical techniques used in this study are Descriptive Statistic, T-test, One-way, ANOVA and Factor Analysis. The instruments utilized in this study are a set of questionnaire (IBQ). The study revealed that majority of the respondents used rational persuasion in influencing their superiors. There is no significant difference between gender and influence tactics and there is no significant difference between service groups and influence tactics. This study also revealed that the main reasons given by employees in using influence tactics is career promotion.
