This study explores parental knowledge on parental practices in preventing children
emotional abuse and neglect thorough examining the relationship between parenting
factors (parental roles on child development, parenting education, parenting style and
parental socialization) and parental practices in preventing children emotional abuse and
neglects; determining the most influential factor that influences parental practices in
preventing children emotional abuse and neglect; and exploring whether household income
has to influence on the relationship between parenting factors and parental practices in
preventing child emotional abuse and neglect. The study was undertaken in Selangor state.
This study chooses this area because this area contributes to the high number of children's
emotional abuse and neglect cases in Malaysia. This research area focuses on the three (3)
districts in Selangor: Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat. This study applied the
quantitative approach by using a set of questionnaires. The data collection for this study
was undertaken online through Whatsapp, SMS, social media and others. A total of 460
respondents who were among parents have responded to the survey which representing
three (3) main districts in Selangor. The analysis undertaken revealed that the level of
parental knowledge on parental practices in preventing children’s emotional abuse and
neglect is high (Mean = 0.516). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, there were
strong influence between parental roles on child development (p = 0.004), parenting
education (p = 0.516), parenting style (p = 0.000) and parental socialization (p = 0.030)
and parental practices in preventing children emotional abuse and neglects. Subsequently,
the findings of this study revealed that parenting style was the most influencing factor in
preventing children's emotional abuse and neglect (Parenting Style, p = 0.000; β = 0.266).
Lastly, this study discovered that household income did not moderate the relationship
between factors (parental roles on child development; parenting education; parenting style;
parental socialization) and parental practices in preventing child emotional abuse and
neglect (p > 0.05).
