One of the leaders who play an important role in management of primary and secondary schools in Malaysia is the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs. This position is the opportunity for teachers to get promoted as a head school. Even though there are other senior assistants in the school such as Senior Assistant for Students Affairs, Senior Assistant for Co-Curricular Affairs and the Afternoon Supervisor, the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs has the most number of responsibilities. Besides taking over as the school head when the head is not around, the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs has to ensure all teachers in the school continue with their teaching responsibility. The Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs also has to manage all the curriculum filing system, help the headmaster in the school's administration of human resource and the various inventories, responsible towards the academic performance, handling teacher's appraisal, maintenance of school building, overseeing the non-academic staff and the school finance. Among the senior assistants, the Senior assistant for Curriculum Affairs will be the spokesperson to clients or visitors if the headmaster is not in, attending a meeting, course or on leave. Due to the burden of responsibilities held by the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs, this research would like to find out whether they are adequately prepared to execute their duties and are there any implications if they do not have any experience prior to holding this post. This research also intends to see if training has a better impact on the effectiveness of the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs. The instrument used to investigate the relationship between knowledge, role clarity, experience and training with effectiveness is a set of questionnaire which was adapted from the "Instrumen Kompetensi Pemimpin Sekolah" (KOMPAS) by Aminuddin Baki Institute, Ministry of Education. These were distributed to all primary Senior Assistants (Curriculum Affairs) identified in three districts of Petaling Perdana, Hulu Selangor, and Kuala Langat. The selection criterion was based on "Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah" (UPSR) performance results. From 123 questionnaires distributed, 90 were returned. The data obtained was processed suing the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11.5 using descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, bi variate correlation and partial correlation. Based on the findings, the elements of knowledge, role clarity and are significant to the effectiveness of the Senior Assistants for Curriculum Affairs unlike training which does not have any significance on the effectiveness of the Senior Assistant for Curriculum Affairs.
