Stress in workplace is so common that we tend to accept it as part of our daily living. In reality, stress in workplace or job stress has become a necessity and unavoidable. Many studies and reports show that job stress plays a major role in many chronic health problems, and also could be quite costly. These studies also identified various stressors which cause this phenomenon. This study attempts to identify the level of stress faced by middle managers in Public Service Department of Malaysia (PSD) and determine what the stressors are which caused the stressful condition. Data is collected through personally-distributed questionnaire among middle managers in both Putrajaya (PSD’s headquarter) and Cyberjaya. The questionnaire is derived from combination of two existing measurement tools which are the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) that measures the level of stress and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Indicator tool that measures the stressors. Quantitative analysis is carried out on the data collected. Standard SPSS (version 18.0) is used to run the analysis. Descriptive statistics is used to analyze respondent’s profile while one-sample t-test and multiple regressions (hierarchical) are used to analyze the hypotheses. There are several interesting findings from this study. The first is the perceived level of stress of the respondents is higher than the midpoint which suggests that the level of stress among the middle managers in PSD is high. The second finding is negative perception is the only significant dimension to measure perceived level of stress among middle managers in PSD. The final finding is that there are only four significant stressors namely workload (Task and Speed), Decision Control and Relationship but the model shows that Decision Control has a reverse relationship with perceived level of stress. Middle managers in PSD do perceived that they are experiencing stressful condition. If PSD is to rectify this issue, especially to promote Work-Life balance, the stressors identified could assist in understanding the underlying condition that could jeopardize the successfulness of these programs.
